Kindergarten students spend a lot of time on the carpet playing, reading, listening, learning, and watching. They are just learning how to move and work in a large group. The business of school is new to them. So many things are new to them and they have so many decisions to make that knowing where to sit on the rug is very helpful and helps them define some boundaries as they learn to navigate around other students. We have a large carpet but it is getting old and worn around the edges. We have been told that these word edges can create a hazzard and cause students to stumble. I have found that knowing where to sit helps students feel comfortable and confident. A new rug would continue to help them feel safe and secure and provide an inviting learning environment for them. Kindergarten students need a safe, positive environment that is as free of distractions as possible. They are so easily distracted it can be a challenge to keep them focused on a task. We are lucky to have access to technology and tablets in our classroom, but when students are using the tablets the noise can be distracting to students who are working on other things. Headphones minimize distractions and keep the noise levels down. A new rug and headphones will help create a safe, positive classroom environment with fewer distractions.
