Gift cards to Teachers Pay Teachers will allow me to handpick outstanding lessons and learning materials specific to Utah studies. Much of what is currently published in Utah studies is either too academic or found in expensive textbooks, so we have been making do with generic readings about other times and places, along with my improvised three-ring binders full of news stories. Students love the historical and current issues that come up in our class discussions, but they lack the polished curriculum, the worksheets and graphic organizers and readings, that can guide them to deeper learning at home or at school. Utah studies class is perhaps the best chance my 7th-grade students have to really come to know the place they live and the communities around them, giving them critical citizens' skills of discussing past and present issues knowledgeably and sensitively. But they lack access to engaging and relevant learning materials about Utah, materials that are both accessible to middle schoolers and aesthetically pleasing. To collect quality curriculum materials from other Utah studies teachers will help me deliver this important content more effectively. It will impress upon students that their community in Utah matters, and that our class will make them better civically prepared community members.
