The shut downs during COVID-19 and the resulting pandemic related learning loss of my students is massive. As their teacher I plan on continuing to combat these learning gaps through focused instruction with hands-on manipulatives for subjects such as math and science. In order to meet the Utah 6th grade state math standards for pre-algebra and geometry, I plan on using hands on algebra tiles for students to have a tactile experience with math for spacial awareness and concrete learning to help solidify these abstract concepts. I will also use large math manipulatives for teaching whole class lessons that will demonstrate these math same grade level concepts. I am striving to provide an engaging learning environment where my students feel safe and empowered to learn. I will do this by using classroom organizational supplies to help keep students materials separate for ease of cleaning and sanitizing. I also use both intrinsic and extrinsic learning motivators such as prizes in a treasure box. Also, after months of sitting in front of a computer at home many students have become sedentary. I focus on keeping their minds active by engaging their bodies in focused physical activity. I try to make a connection between mental engagement and physical activity through using large and small motor skills with review games incorporating tossing balls, memorizing facts using jump rope games and chants, and other such games.
