My students are anxious to learn, but they are behind because of missed school and distant learning. They are active learners (20 boys) who respond to activities and games more than the more traditional learning methods. As I screened my students at the beginning of the year for phonics knowledge I was shocked to find out that the majority of the class did not know the "silent e" rule. I also have ELL who are just beginning to learn English. I need to shore up the holes that my students have in phonics so that they can be productive, accomplished readers. Many of the the items I selected for DonorsChoose project will supplement my phonics lessons with engaging games that will reinforce phonics concepts. They will also allow for interactive learning in the small group setting. Finally, the Storyworks magazines will allow my students to put into practice their phonics skills as they read grade-appropriate literature that is relevant to what is happening in the world today.
