Many of our students are behind in reading because of the pandemic. They are missing the reading foundational skills to help them succeed at school and future grades. As an interventionist, I teach several groups of students that are significantly below the reading grade level benchmark. We are addressing the instructional piece of helping students to progress in reading by identifying areas of weaknesses and providing instruction to fill these holes, but students need to practice using the skills they are explicitly taught. By providing high interest books that students are excited to read, we help build student motivation. Not only do students' ability to read improve, but their background knowledge and vocabulary increase as well. As I have learned more through professional development, like LETRS, this will help students develop into better readers and hopefully develop the love of reading.
