Primary documents like the Constitution are essential in social studies education. In a U.S. government course, we want students reading the documents themselves and working to make sense of them instead of reading or being told what they mean. We know learning happens when students discover for themselves. Students having their own copy of the Constitution that they can reference when needed in class means they can underline important ideas that they want to remember, take notes in the margins describing what the the words they read mean, and use it often. It becomes their copy of the Constitution. Reading the words of the founders of our nation will help students prepare to be informed and engaged citizens for the rest of their lives.
