I am requesting books, book stand storage bins and hands on materials for phonics instruction. I am a new teacher so my classroom library is limited in its size and in its scope. I'm happy and grateful for this opportunity to provide my first graders with an expanded menu of reading materials and storage. The titles I selected represent a diversity of life experiences and varying levels of reading difficulty. Many are fun and silly -- like the children themselves. Others are more serious and thoughtful. All are intended to help the kids feel hopeful in the midst of still challenging times. The children in my classroom have wide ranging capacities in terms of reading ability. The learning deficits resulting from distance learning for some are huge. However, there are titles included in my request that can challenge each one of them just enough to help them feel successful and to feel like the smart kids they are! Additionally, a handful of the titles are mentor texts for our writing lessons. My request also includes some materials intended to enhance my phonics instruction, and to make my students' phonics practice more hands on. Strong, explicit phonics instruction is such an important piece of Language Arts --especially for my students that missed out last year and are playing catch up.
