What better way to teach about kindness and acceptance than from reading. The Coretta Scott King Award book pack features stories of people conquering their differences to make a positive impact on the world. Students need to have exposure to stories in which characters learn to unite rather than divide because of their differences; this book pack would give them that experience. The fourth grade core Literature Standard 3 and 4 explain students must determine themes, characters, setting, ect from stories or dramas. In addition, gathering to discuss the themes of these books would be Speaking and Listening Standard 1. If we are to learn of kindness and working together, students need a space that will give them a safe environment to practice those skills. The students need a designated space in the classroom to easily transform into a group learning space. Classrooms run tight on space, especially with 28 fourth grade sized bodies in them! The stacking stools would provide a perfect, space-savvy, product for students to quickly arrange in a circle to work in their group. In this space students can practice their readers theatres, discuss their Caldecott Award winning book, and practice being kind. Finally, readers theaters plays provide a wonderful opportunity for students to learn patience, kindness, leadership, and not to mention fluency in reading (accuracy, rate, expression). The fourth grade core Literature Standard 3 and 4 explain students must determine themes, characters, setting, ect from stories or dramas. Reading the text of the fables would hit Reading Foundations Skills Standard 3. Not to mention, this activity will lead the students into eventually writing their own fable; Writing Standard 1.
