Students always learn better with experience. My students will grow their own set of plants that show results from three generations of seedlings. They will be able to explain an inheritance pattern using observations and evidence gathered during the growing process. They will physically see how the combination of genetics affects physical characteristics of future generations. Students will be able to personally connect to the project. I always get the question of why am I "X" when the rest of my family is "Y". ("X" and "Y" represents different physical characteristics such as eye color, hair color, tall/short, etc.). During this project students will be able to see the effect of dominant and recessive traits in action and relate that to their characteristics and how they differ from their parents. As an added bonus, students will be able to take the growing seed discs home to plant after the project is over to show their families. Materials can also be used for future classes. Seeds will have to be replaced but the light bar, petri dishes, and germination trays can be reused to do the project again.
