When I met my students they were impacted by two years of virtual learning. Many struggled to read and most hesitated to label themselves as readers. The refrain "I can't read" was a common one in our classroom. Then things began to change, they slowly and surely became readers. Many read their first-ever "chapter book", delving deep into the world of Jack and Annie, Ivy and Bean, or Mercy Watson. The entire class lets out a cheer each time someone announces they have finished a new chapter. My readers need comfy seating and more books that reflect the diversity of our community to share with each other. My goal is to send these second graders off at the end of the year with a vision of themselves as lifelong readers. I believe this donation will support my vision, with a classroom full of high-quality books and comfy spaces to read them.
