My students are from all over the world, and have a variety of interests. I also have a wide range of readers in my classes, some who are at a lower level and some who are very advanced. Regardless of their reading level or interests, I want to take my students somewhere they've never gone with their reading. Most students are familiar with virtual reality, but few have experienced VR as a learning tool. My hope is to create my own class library with titles that my students are interested in, and then create VR learning opportunities to go along with each book. The books I've chosen are books I've enjoyed throughout each stage of reading in my life starting back in elementary school. I already have a good library started in my classroom and the students have really enjoyed going through it over the years. One student described it as "Mr. Kendell's wall of recommendations". They know they can pick a book and bring it to me for a quick review before deciding on one to dive into. Reading is a passion of mine, but I realize not all high school students share that passion yet. I do, however, believe there are ways to entice and motivate an uninterested reader. If I can convince a student to read Inferno, and then offer them a VR tour of the museums and different parts of Europe they are reading about, that book will come to life!
