When I teach students with mild and moderate disabilities, they often struggle to manage the cognitive load of maintaining their thoughts, typing, and reading from a graphic organizer simultaneously. When one considers that many of them lack typing proficiency, it makes writing even more intimidating and seemingly impossible. With the use of headphone with microphones, my students can practice the writing concepts that I teach them without the hinderance of these additional factors and can therefore access the same curriculum and their regular education peers. Chromebooks allow for voice typing, but chromebooks do not have background noise cancelling technology and presents a significant challenge when multiple students are trying to complete their work simultaneously. Headphones are the one additional piece of equipment that we need to give these students a feeling of success without all of the frustration.
