As a music teacher, I often get to have conversations with my students about emotions and hard situations in life. Music has the ability to reach straight for the heart and evoke emotions that a child may be repressing or unable to feel in other ways. I have had young students moved to tears more than once just from listening to a piece of music. The xylophone I am requesting will be used as a tool for creating music with my students' own expressions in many different ways. We will: create soundscapes for stories, make accompaniments for various feelings in poems, and construct musical scores for our own created songs. The Orff instrument I have chosen is specifically designed for use with children. It is small, and has removable tone bars, enabling me as the teacher to set up a scale that is simple for the child to create from.
