Many of my struggling readers and advanced readers alike would benefit by connecting to the stories we read in class and through engaging reading activities. First, I want to integrate world geography into the stories we are reading in our basal. I need a world map in order to accomplish this, and because we already sit at a rug to read, a rug with a map on it makes perfect sense. My students struggle with geographical knowledge, so this is a goal of mine. Furthermore, to increase engagement, I would love to do a March Madness book match-up. I would do so by reading the selected books and having the students vote on them. I would move from 16 to 8 to 4 to 2 to 1 book winner, much like the basketball tournament. Finally, I would love to purchase a reading intervention program on Teachers Pay Teachers by Balanced Literacy. This program is leveled and focuses on not only fluency, but word recognition, comprehension. and syllabications skills. Each of my DonorsChoose requests would pique my students' interests and allow them to connect to what we are reading in class. What more could I ask for?
