COVID-19 has been hard on everyone. It has been especially hard on students with disabilities who lack the words to communicate how they feel, and students who rely heavily on routines and structure to understand what is happening in the world around them. The majority of my students are on the Autism spectrum and struggle academically, socially, and emotionally. Communicating with others both in the areas of receptive and expressive language is exceptionally hard for them, many had tantrums and meltdowns so electronics became their babysitters and filled up way too many hours of their time. By donating to my project you will be providing my students with flexibility as to where and how they are taught, along with hands-on activities to support their kinesthetic learning styles. The mobile whiteboard, construction kits, and other STEM items will present opportunities to socialize and interact with their peers through STEM activities and games designed specifically for the needs addressed in their Individualized Education Program. The STEM occupational therapy, and engineering activities and games I have chosen will help give my students a much-needed break from electronics. Through learning to think for themselves, and how to work with a partner or as part of a team, my students will learn valuable life skills that will help them gain confidence in their abilities to access their grade level environments, and also their communities. By gaining more confidence my students will acquire a better sense of self-worth. They will develop more independence, and learn valuable job skills that will aid in helping them find employment post-high school.
