As a ELA special education teacher who works with junior high students to improve their reading and writing skills, access to quality, high-interest books is absolutely essential to get these reluctant readers to engage with literacy. By providing my students with a diverse array of books, they are more likely to find something that sparks their interest and encourages their growth as readers. To become good readers, students have to read and putting great books in their hands increases the chances that they will read. This collection of books will enhance our classroom library. It also provides students with books that are windows into the lives of people different than them as well as mirrors that reflect their own backgrounds and experiences. These books will assist students in developing better reading skills, engaging their minds, improving their empathy towards others, and enhancing their literacy experiences.
