My project is to get class sets of books for us to read together. My students live in a rural community and many of them haven’t had the opportunity to consider what life might be like for others outside of this community or for those who live with disabilities. These class sets of books will give me a chance to have students read and discuss situations of other teens who are very different than themselves. When students better understand others’ different perspectives and backgrounds, they have more empathy. The world is going increasing digital, which has been amplified by the need to social distance and quarantine due to COVID-19. It is more important than ever to teach students to connect with others on an emotional level. Reading high-interest books about realistic characters facing challenges helps widen student perspectives and creates resilience. This generation needs these skills to navigate these complex and conflict-filled times.
