In teaching math, many students ask when will I ever use this. In response to this, I often show examples from Physics. I have also started teaching a concurrent enrollment Physics course, similar to an AP course. The two labs that I have selected will help students visually understand the concepts of Physics and how math applies to real world examples. Many students have missed out on these opportunities being quarantined or absent for illness related issues. Labs provide opportunities for collaborative learning, team building, positive self esteem, and concept reinforcement. In working with others, students have to rely on each other. Many labs need partners to be more efficient and easier to do. Students help each other have success and help each other learn from their mistakes as well. Labs are great places to try new things and reflect on what went well and what didn't go well. This is a great resiliency skill to see that not everything goes as planned and we still move forward. While working on labs students learn how to interact with each other. They have to communicate what they are doing and relate how that goes along with the work of others. Labs are a great way to see how the theoretical book work is turned into real life applications. Students reinforce their knowledge gained from class work and see the formulas in action. I look forward to adding these labs to the class and seeing students further their knowledge and life skills.
