I want my 7th graders to have a book with a main character who seems ordinary on the outside, but that is struggling and fighting battles unseen by most of the world. Many of my students struggle with being able to admit or even recognize when they're struggling. Reading this book as a class will not only help them strengthen their reading comprehension skills, but will also allow for open discussion about human emotion, how to regulate and cope when life is challenging, and how people and circumstances can change. My students will read the book together, then create a poster that teaches about a mindfulness/coping strategy that could help the main character get through a hard time. these strategies will be taught by our school counselor and having the students transfer this knowledge and apply it to the text we are reading will deepen their learning and synthesis skills.
