It is essential to have reading materials available for instruction and independent reading that are at an appropriate level so students can experience success. This project will provide me with a greater library of engaging books to use during my small group reading instruction. Many of the materials I have now are old and are targeted for use in Kindergarten or first grade. It is important for a second grader who is below level to read interesting, yet simple text. Students will also have access to these titles to take home and practice. For Distance Learning, the leveled books sets and headphones with microphones can be checked out. Students will learn to make a Flipgrid recording of themselves reading which I can listen to. These recordings can also help foster reading fluency by allowing the student to HEAR themselves read aloud. This can benefit them by providing self-evaluation opportunities. In addition to providing immediate feedback, I would have my students regularly listen to themselves read during seatwork time while I am instructing a small group. I have included a few math center games to help my students practice skills and stay engaged during this reading rotation time. My reading data this year shows the impact that the pandemic has had on my unique students. They need more reading practice that gives the most bang for the buck! With these sturdy headphones with microphones and hand selected sets of leveled reading books, I believe my students will make gains in fluency, feel successful and learn to love reading!
