The desks grouped neatly in communities of four, each desk with its own, individual student chair. CRASH! In storms the school year, 2020-2021! The numerous emails from the school principal, the CDC, the school nurse to give updates on "How to keep our classrooms safe in the COVID pandemic." Desks in rows, apart from class neighbors. Wait! Large class size and desks spaced apart? Now into the 2021-2022 school year, COVID is continuing to effect our classroom community. A creative way to address the seating to allow for more spacious seating designs is alternative seating options. Traditionally, I have used student desks with chairs grouped into small communities of four to six students. With the safety protocols for students to remain safe, healthy and in school, I feel that my classroom needs to provide a newer, innovative seating alternative. There is a great deal of research showing the academic benefits for increased learning and on task behavior when wobble chairs and alternative seating is used. I have many students behind due to Covid that I am trying to close the gap and maximize their learning. I would like to recreate the small communities within our classroom by changing the traditional desks/chairs arrangement with the use of wobble chairs, desks and individual floor/desks called "surf seats". The wobble chairs and surf seats take much less space than traditional seating with no fingers being pinched between a neighbor's chair! The surf seats would create another option to seat students around spaces in the room, not occupied with desks.
