The first and most important impact that the 3D printing project will have is the ability to capture attention and drive engagement. Being able to print a model they designed and test it will bring real-world engineering into the hands of students. We will use the printer to create class projects that test principles of force, tensile strength, resonance, damage mitigation, and energy production in ways that discussion, theory, and virtual models never could. We will also use the printer to create detailed models of molecules, cell structures, and anatomy to better explore things that are impossible to see and difficult to understand. This will help students engage after years of feeling separated from the hands on, exciting side of science.
