I teach mathematics at our local junior high. I mostly teach 7th graders. These students are coming from Elementary School and have not used scientific calculators very much. Their first substantial exposure to using scientific calculators is in my math classroom. I encourage students to purchase their own calculator. Some of the student do, and this is great. Some of the students do not, so it is extremely helpful to have a classroom set of scientific calculators for them to use. Learning how to use scientific calculators is an important skill. As the students progress in mathematics, they will learn how to do more complicated problems that will require this type of calculator.
