I have found that dynamic projects can increase the investment and likelihood that students will be able to get to a great idea. The mirror etching project is one of these really great projects. Students create their image from start to finish, transfer it to their mirror, and then cut the contact paper into an image. The image is then created by either sandblasting the mirror or using acidic etching cream. It has become impossible to use mirror etching cream because of the very caustic fumes produced and the inability to vent those fumes. If I am to do this project I need to move toward sandblasting. This is much better for the respiratory system of participants as well as being much more environmentally friendly.
