The selected texts will be given out as literature circles so students not only read the texts but have chance to discuss what they read with their peers. Their reading will be done at home and at school. I have chosen books that my students might not normally read in order to get them to expand the way they see the world. The more students can learn about others, the more empathy they will develop. As a teacher we have so many things that we are asked to teach our students, among those things there are things that we are not asked to do, but the impact is long lasting. Empathy, kindness, patience and hard work are some of those things. Empathy is not one of the standards that I am charged with teaching but it is one that I feel strongly about relaying to my students.
