My students love working together as a class. Class discussion and group-work are core elements to our learning. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened our learning disparity. Students have been stuck learning at home, and they all have different levels of success. My lowest performing students are falling further behind while my accelerated students are eager to proceed. We'll continue learning as a class, but I'm adding individual learning time where students can learn at their own pace. Each student will get a lesson chosen directly for them at their level. That means in a class of 32 students, we could need 32 lessons. This is why we need headphones and calculators. I can only teach one lesson at a time. But if I employ individual, digital lessons I can cater to each student's needs. Most of them will need headphones. All of them need calculators.
