The use of an atlas for each student in the classroom will allow our students to better understand their world. It is not just the names of countries, rivers, mountains, or seas. It is picturing the people that live there and how they are impacted by their part of the physical world. When students can use numbers involved with population studies together with a map and see how the mountains and rivers of that area might effect the population, their world comes to life. When they realize the impact of climate on resources, they have a better picture of jobs, health, and family. Our geographic world is so much more than the physical planet we live on. The human geography tells a story too. The desk atlas would give my students current information with maps to enhance their understanding.
