All of the items I have requested will go directly into a comprehensive classroom library with multicultural voices; some of the texts I have requested are myths and legends from different countries, which is always very popular. Other texts I have requested include middle and high school fictional experiences of diverse voices, which will reflect on my own students' lives. The goal is to help them see that their cultures and heritage are rich and vibrant. The books I have requested will greatly benefit their social-emotional learning as they understand that their struggles are not uniquely different, and that they are similarly represented in literature. Too often students see a lack of representation of themselves, and similarly feel that they are not "deserving" of a place in a library, classroom, or society. I want to change this; even displaying books in a classroom, where the authors' names are diverse or the book covers depict diverse characters, can be a great way to showcase diversity. I have also requested a few small items that we use for down time / crafts / rewards, and a camera lens for me to use to capture portrait photos and memories of this school year. I will be staying in education long-term, and I will continue to use this lens with my own camera for this purpose. This is the first school year since the pandemic began where we are mostly in-person, and I'd love to capture these moments for the school yearbook.
