One of our units in 6th grade has to do with matter and heat transfer. In this unit, we discuss how things look at the atomic and molecular level. Students can struggle to understand models of things that are different than what they in their real world. By giving students prepared slides of specimens and allowing them to bring things from home to examine under a microscope, they are able to reframe how they perceive the world around them. They recognize details that are not visible to the naked eye and get very excited to look at as many other things as they can. This lesson helps them better prepare to understand what is happening at the molecular level in objects and what happens at the molecular level of objects when heat energy is transferred to or away from those objects.
