As a 2nd grade teacher, one of the biggest aspects of education that has been affected by the COVID pandemic is literacy. My students came to me this year with reading abilities far below where they should be starting 2nd grade. It is my job to help them progress and improve their reading abilities to get caught up where they need to be!
To strengthen student's reading skills, each day we spend time working in small reading groups, on phonics skills, phonemic awareness instruction, and reading a class novel. These skills are imperative to strengthen my students reading abilities! I would love to add a classroom rug as a gathering place for students to congregate for our daily phonemic awareness lesson and read aloud. Having an option other than their desks, gives students an opportunity to gather together and build our classroom community during designated reading times.
Additionally, I have asked for several moveable floor seats to be used during our daily small group tier 2 time. Some students read from their individual book boxes during this time, and it would be wonderful to be able to offer them a flexible seating option where they can be comfortable rather than their desks.
Providing my students a rug and other flexible seating options will be an asset for our classroom as we gather together to learn!
