My percussion students learn how to play on the keyboard instruments as well as the drums. We have a xylophone and glockenspiels but we do not have a marimba. The marimba is so crucial when playing percussion ensemble pieces since it has its own separate part and helps the students learn to differentiate between parts and playing harmony versus melody. I would also like to give my students a chance to learn how to play multiple keyboard instruments so that they are more prepared to play when they move on to the high school years. We start our students in band and percussion in the 5th grade and it would be ideal to give them a good foundation on the keyboard instruments. Students would use the metal glockenspiels at home to practice and then use the marimba in class. We have multiple pieces where having the mellow tones of the marimba would change the whole sound of the band and the song that we are playing. It also allows more students to play on keyboard instruments and develop as a musicians.
