Everyone needs to eat and most people love to eat. I would be thrilled to help my students experience the chemistry behind what they eat. COVID-19 made teaching chemistry difficult when everything went online and at home. I found it very difficult to work with my students in a lab or hands-on way when I wasn't able to supply a lab and materials (chemicals) to go with it. One thing that almost all homes have is a kitchen, so I have been brainstorming the idea of teaching the chemistry behind cooking. My favorite labs are not the labs that teach abstract chemistry, but the labs that teach chemistry in a simple way with simple materials that students can replicate anytime they want. Cooking chemistry is a way that students can experience chemistry at home or at school. If students are away from school due to COVID-19, or another reason, they would be able to complete a chemistry lab at home with simple equipment and ingredients that are found in most kitchens. I would love to give my students the opportunity to learn the chemistry behind what they cook and eat.
