This project would allow us to replace damaged (i.e. well-loved) copies of the book The Graveyard Book with fresh ones. It would also provide options for seeing the text in a different format via the graphic novel. Lastly, The Alchemist would provide a beautifully written option for students to end their 8th-grade year with hope and aspiration for their lives in high school and beyond. The Graveyard Book and The Alchemist are beautifully written stories with powerful messages about facing life with courage and finding our own way to happiness. Students study the story and craft of writing through "The Graveyard Book" novel and graphic novel. As we study, we deeply discuss symbolism and find meaningful lessons that help us live better lives. Students end the unit with a discussion of the Hero's journey and the symbolism of going through our own trials to find our courage. We have already studied this text, but many of our books are damaged. It would also open up opportunities to explore visual storytelling through graphic novels to help develop their visualization and support struggling readers. We would all be deeply grateful for these resources!
