These last few years, I've been working hard to build the performing arts at my school. Our theater program has flourished, but our music department lacks instruments. With this project, I'll be able to have students take a more active role in composing their own music and really applying the lessons we have about music theory. We have done composition projects in the past using Chrome Music lab, but many students quickly progress farther than that site allows. With physical keyboards, students will be able to more easily create, perform and record their musical creations using proper musical notation. This is so important because part of my goal for my music classroom is to teach students that they are capable. They can try new things and be successful. In light of the last few years with COVID-19, I think that helping students to view themselves as capable and in control of their learning is so important. When I spoke with my 6th and 7th grade students last year about distance learning, the hardest thing for many of them was that they felt confused and out of control. These composition projects not only teach them that they can act as a musician, but also that they are in control of their own learning and that curiosity is the road to life-long learning. I want them to be able to experience the power of questioning "Well, what if I try this note?" or "What if I change the instrument or tempo here?" Through their music, they can express themselves in ways they might not be able to elsewhere.
