Science literacy is essential in today's world. Students are constantly bombarded with fake science and news. In order to evaluate the science they come across, I try to provide them with ample exposure to different media sources throughout the year. In collaboration with our English department, my students get to select a science fiction or non-fiction book related to Biology and write a research paper about the information presented in the book. Students take ownership, selecting their book, the scientific principles they want to research, and draft a paper supported by primary research published in peer-review journals. This models one of the key ways students can determine what is fact or fiction in media today. Students enjoy this project and would LOVE greater access to books in the classroom. Author diversity is a huge push, as I hope to expose students to scientists and writers of all backgrounds. Please help us expand our classroom library and provide these students with resources to help them with their science literacy and reading skills!
