In sophomore year, my students read a variety of texts that reflect cultural perspectives. While the excerpts provided in our district curriculum do a good job of introducing a wide breadth of authors and voices, it would be wonderful to immerse my students in a full-length novel that many of them can personally relate to. Having a class set of this contemporary, high-interest text would motivate my students as readers and critical thinkers. When students enjoy what they read, they want to read more, which promotes passionate discussions and creative learning.
