I use literature as both a lens into the world outside us and as a mirror to reflect our own experiences. I would like to ensure that my classroom library provides a multicultural and diverse range of literature to help my students identify with and learn about a variety of cultures and heritage. I strongly believe that reading and learning about the experiences of others helps students become more empathetic and understanding to lives that differ from theirs. I am requesting graphic novels to provide my students opportunities to read and experience a variety of literature that represents diverse cultures and heritage and highlights the universality of the human experience. It is my goal to help every student develop a love of reading. I believe that there is a book out there for everyone, and in my experience graphic novels appeal to a large audience, specifically my reluctant readers.
