Research has proven that children need to develop a strong foundation in phonological awareness (the ability to notice and manipulate sounds in words) to become proficient readers and writers. Phonological awareness needs to be explicitly taught in order for students to learn how to use our alphabetic principles. These materials will help target students' individual deficit areas. Students will set personalized phonemic goals based on their individual needs. The teacher and students will collaborate and adjust their goals as needed. Students will use these self-checking games during reading station time. After students feel they have mastered the skill they will choose a new goal to work on.
