Students who have mental health diagnosis need a space in the building where they can reset their mind and their five senses. Students with mental health diagnosis often feel overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of a middle school environment that consist of loud noises, a variety of smells and crowded hallways. Which can cause them to go into sensory overload. Sensory overload can present as shutting down, leaving the classroom without permission and defiance. A mindfulness space in the building will allow these students to have a place where their five senses are being engaged in calm and relaxing manner to help them to rest and recharge in order to re-enter the classroom.
We all need a break sometimes- where we can just stop and take a breath.
The goal of my project is to create a mindfulness area that engages all five of student’s senses. Students can come into this space and take sensory breaks. The materials that I am requesting all come together to create this space for students. To provide a sense of warmth I will have a comfortable chair in the mindfulness area and lava lamp. Student can request calming music on the Alexa and breath in stress relieving scents from the diffuser. Student will be able to choose calm-down items to engage their sense of touch. Calm-down items consist of a variety of fidgets, mindfulness coloring books, slime and kinetic sand. Helping students to relax, reflect and reset.
