Authentic learning begins when content becomes relevant to students. These titles have been specifically chosen to engage students across content and reading levels. Students will analyze nonfiction texts and learn about viruses in both science and English class, examining the question: are viruses alive or not? What could be more relevant than viruses in our current pandemic? In English, students will read about the history of pandemics and their impact on the world. Students will learn how to assess nonfiction texts about viruses and make connections to science class. By the end of the unit, students will be able to make comparisons from past pandemics to what they have been experiencing the past few years. Connecting content in multiple classes helps students see the relevance of what they are learning and also makes the content more accessible.
