In addition to injury and illness, I have students come to the health room everyday because they are hungry, anxious or overwhelmed. Often times all they know is that they have a tummy ache or a headache, but through connection we discover together what the need in the moment is. My goal is to create a health room that cares for a child's whole self - physical, social and emotional. Students with full hearts and bellies are students that can learn and grow best. Sensory toys are proven to increase calm and focus, and having these tools to practice breathing exercises and emotional regulation will be very helpful for kids with big feelings. Having food available is a great way to build a healthy attachment, and snacks are especially important for kids that didn't have breakfast. Band-aids to match the wide range of skin colors in the school is a small but meaningful way to build inclusion. For a lot of kids, having an ice pack is as much about comfort as injury. I go through a LOT of plastic baggies that are only used for a few minutes. A small freezer with reusable ice packs that can be sanitized will save these bags from ending up in the landfill or ocean.
