Literacy is a powerful tool when working with students. Reading helps us learn about ourselves and others. It opens the world of possibilities and makes us feel less alone. Reading stories about people who are coping with or have overcome grief, trauma, domestic violence, bullying, or anxiety is a great way to bring up these hard-to-talk-about topics. Children who are making sense of their world greatly benefit from reading stories they can relate to and feel empowered that they can take on the challenges they face. Lodestar serves students from Kindergarten to 10th grade (next year - 11th grade!). Students request counseling for a variety of issues. I have selected a diverse array of books with themes on social identities, growth mindset, bullying, anxiety, domestic violence, empathy, anger, transitions, and trauma. I have also included workbooks and journals on these topics so our students can incorporate writing in their healing process. Whether it is in individual sessions, small groups, or in the classroom, these books and workbooks are going to make a huge difference our students' social emotional well-being.
