My students become restless as they sit at their desks in the traditional student chair. Students tend to be active while completing their work independently or in groups. I have observed students trying different ways such as standing or leaning back in their chair to get comfortable. Standing and rocking is not a problem for me but tends to be distracting to those who sit behind or next to them. Some have even fallen out of their seats which causes an interruption or injury. Having seating that allows students to move without the risk of getting hurt or distracting others would be a big plus for our classroom. Flexible sitting will allow students to have movement which will have a positive effect on their learning. The flexible seating will allow them to complete their work as they rock, wobble, or lean. These natural movements allow them to be alert and more focused. As more funds become available, I will increase the number and types of flexible seating in the classroom.
