My middle school students are continually trying to "dig deeper" into what we are looking at and learning about in science class. Their favorite activities involve magnifying glasses and microscopes, which we have used for life science as well as earth science. Being able to get closer and have a more detailed view leads to a deeper understanding of the way the world works. Portable science equipment allow us to take learning beyond our classroom walls and into the great outdoors. Large microscopes are expensive and not very portable. Magnifying glasses are portable but offer very limited magnification. The small, hand-held microscopes will let us have instant and safe access to the smaller world where ever we are. From viewing insect eggs to identifying the composition of rocks, the world will, quite literally, be at our fingertips.
