As a school counselor, I prioritize the mental health of everyone in our school community. Creating warm, inviting and comfortable spaces within the school is important to me. Our high school is a public Title I school, with 96% of our students being economically disadvantaged. Our school building is very old and outdated, without many resources. Many students come in with mental health needs and look for social-emotional support within the building. With this project, I hope to change the look and feel of our school building. I want to create a counseling space that allows everyone to feel warm, welcomed and invited. I am asking for warm lighting, rugs, comfortable seats, encouraging posters, and plants so that students, families, and staff members can use the space and feel better in our space. I this project is funded, I hope to take this idea and branch it out to other parts of the school building, including our library. This project will help create a school building that is comforting and supports the mental health of the whole community.
