All the research shows that time spent reading (and getting lost in a good story) is directly connected with achievement and all kinds of positive future outcomes. My goal is to provide this reading time and opportunity to my students, but my classroom library needs a boost. We need a wide variety of high-interest, culturally diverse books that will catch my students' fancy! Students will spend 15-20 minutes a day reading self-selected books from this new collection. I'll host weekly reading circles with guided prompts to get students to share about their chosen books. Studies demonstrate that the ability to choose what they read, combined with opportunities for social interaction around reading, increases student motivation and reading progress.
