The cardiovascular system is the transport center for the entire body, consisting of your heart, blood vessels, and the blood they transport. The heart is specifically designed to function as the pump, circulating oxygen-poor blood to the lungs to be oxygenated, and oxygen-rich blood out to your various organs to transport nutrients. Students will be dissecting a non-human mammalian heart, which has the same organization and function as a human heart. Students will be able to: List the overall function of the cardiovascular system and summarize how it uses the heart, blood vessels, and blood to accomplish this function. - Explain the three factors that can cause resistance to blood flow through the vessels. - Describe the location of the heart in your body, using appropriate anatomical terminology. - Explain the purpose of the pericardial cavity. - Sketch the interior of the heart and label the atria, ventricles, valves, and major arteries and veins. - Explain the importance of valves in the heart.
