This year I was approached by a number of students who wanted to start a chess club to learn and play chess on campus. We have grown from a handful of students to a group of around 20 that meet twice a week to play chess together. However, we only have two chess sets, and most students have to play against each other online, which does not provide as interactive or enjoyable of an experience. Playing chess helps to develop many mental skills that are useful in life, such as: logic, strategic and tactical thinking, planning and preparation, and problem-solving. Our Chess Club provides an opportunity to simply have fun playing the game and making friendships, while building these skills at the same time.
