Students use tools like these every single day in my ELA class. Over 100 students come to my classroom each day to read high-level texts, reflect individually and in groups, and write their little hearts out in response to thought-provoking prompts. When students are reading, they are encouraged to make annotations in the margins of their texts with highlighters of different colors, then use those annotations to further their thinking in preparation for the writing done in their composition notebooks. Students compile their best writing samples and ideas in their folders to submit as a culminating portfolio at the end of eighth grade. We are constantly in need of pencils, as students are constantly writing. Our classroom uses post-it notes in various ways to share ideas, check-in with tasks, and post on our hashtag wall (where we turn ideas into hashtags to share with the masses). Index cards are used for our word wall to expand the vocabulary of our students both in English and Spanish, allowing students to make those connections beyond my classroom walls.
