As we expand our writing lessons, my students are enthusiastic about jumping into cursive writing. A few have already begun learning at home, but many are curious about the letter formation. They have watched me sign my name or seen cursive writing in books and want to understand how to read and create it themselves. We will use these books in the classroom to enhance their writing skills and help them hone in on the letter formation development. The expansion of technology may seem to be turning cursive into a lost art, but there are many benefits in students learning cursive writing. There is a precision and fine motor skill that goes into forming cursive letters. There are also studies that show cursive may produce a better speller and writer as children learn to connect the letters and words processing them quicker and organizing them into stronger sentences. Also, there is a connection to the past in being able to read historical documents. These lessons will definitely be useful in the classroom in creating stronger readers and writers.
